McGruff Kits, LLC has a 30-year history of initiating projects that advance American society by creating socially responsible communications materials for American companies and consumers. It all started in1992, when the National Crime Prevention Council invited us to join the McGruff the Crime Dog® licensing program, which became the lifeblood of our company.

Since then, we have strategized a host of opportunities presented by McGruff the Crime Dog and his widely recognized “Take A Bite Out of Crime” public-service advertising campaign. With the success of our original McGruff Safe Kids Identification Kit, we have gone on to create other licensed products with McGruff.

We have shared our knowledge and partnered with large U. S. corporations, state law enforcement agencies and international companies in the research, design and production of customized child/family safety materials, including:

  • General Mills Hamburger Helper brand
  • General Mills Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereals in a co-branding event with Safeway Food Stores
  • ADT Security Services, Inc.
  • Attorneys general and state law enforcement organizations

On the international front, we have worked with the following companies:

  • Honeywell UK who created an adaptation of the McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit and McGruff Safer Seniors Kit to accommodate the cultural needs of the United Kingdom
  • Innova Technology, a Malaysian company that customized our product to address stranger danger and abduction issues within Southeast Asia

Fast forward to the spring of 2014

We received a call from a long-time customer, Sergeant Jacqueline Fortune of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Houston, Texas. She told us about a community meeting her department held that focused on protecting senior citizens. Her office used our McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit to address wandering, a serious condition related to people with dementia. Sergeant Fortune’s call prompted us to research the dangers of wandering and, through the experience we’ve gained producing family-safety publications, we created “A Caregiver’s Guide to Wandering.”

The VA Palo Alto Health Care Systems, Police Service, Veterans Safety Program was the first to use the caregiver’s guide at their Veterans’ Safety Fair and have since introduced it into their emergency room.  "We plan to hand these out to everyone possible, since the goal of our program is to keep patients in their homes for as long as is safely possible. We believe education is a vital part of managed care and this guide is an excellent resource for families," says Susan Harrison, LCSW, Social Work Liaison, Veteran Safety Awareness Program, Emergency Department Social Services Coordinator Palo Alto VA Medical Center.
